Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff

This debut fantasy novel is the first of a series about a 16-year-old Japanese girl with special talents.  When stranded on a mission to capture a mythological griffin, her only companion is a crippled tiger.  The setting is the Shogunate of Shima,  a dystopian steampunk world.

“What’s that? You say you’ve got a Japanese Steampunk novel with mythic creatures, civil unrest, and a strong female protagonist? I’m afraid I missed everything you said after “Japanese Steampunk.” That’s all I really needed to hear.” –Patrick Rothfuss, #1 New York Times bestselling author of  The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear

The Author

Not a lot of information about Mr. Kristoff but he is from Australia and has this to say about himself:

Jay is 6’7 and has approximately 13870 days to live. He abides in Melbourne with his secret agent kung-fu assassin wife, and the world’s laziest Jack Russell.  He does not believe in happy endings.

Collecting the Book

UK members will be pleased to know that there is a UK edition and it will be the true first edition being released on September 13 by Tor UK and there is also an Australian edition to be released by PanMacMillan on the same day.  ( I assume the Austalian version is similar to the UK edition – can’t tell from the web site).

There is no information on book signing events on the web site.  So signed books may be difficult to obtain but these would be preferred … especially Australian and UK editions which likely will be smaller printings.

The second book of the series will be out in mid 2013.

  1. Dr Matthew JNelson says:

I talked to Jay Kristoff via email. He won’t be in the states signing books until sometime next year. He will sign books if they are sent to him, but the postage to AU is pretty steep. He may be at Worldcon and some other conventions in 2013. He plans to sign a lot of books when he is in the States, so there may be a fair number available then.
